How can we help?
Answers about getting started, your key, calls, on-device AI and privacy.
Getting started
Where can I get SovTalk?
SovTalk is coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. It needs iOS 26 or later on iPhone, or Android 14 or later.
How do I create an account?
Open the app and tap "Create my identity". There's no email address, phone number or password: the app creates a secret key on your phone, and that key is your account. Then add your name and, if you like, a photo in Profile. SovTalk is for people 16 and older.
What's my public ID?
It's how people find you, like a username. It starts with npub1. You'll find it,
with your QR code, in Profile under "Your public ID".
Adding friends
How do I add a friend?
In Messages, tap the people button to open Friends, then "Add a friend". Scan their QR code, or paste their public ID, and tap "Send friend request". They'll see it the next time they open SovTalk.
Why can't I find someone by name?
Names are searched only among people you've already seen on SovTalk, on your phone. To find anyone else, use their public ID or QR code. There's no central directory of users, by design.
Why don't I see posts from people I'm not friends with?
The Feed shows posts from your friends and you only. There's no global timeline.
Backing up your key
Why do I need to back up my secret key?
There's no password reset. If you lose your phone and your secret key, nobody can recover your account, not even SovTalk. Back it up as soon as you can.
How do I back it up?
Go to Profile → "Back up secret key". You can save it to your password manager ("Save to
Passwords" on iPhone, "Save to password manager" on Android), or write it on paper: it starts
with nsec1, followed by numbered groups of four characters. Keep the paper somewhere
safe and never share the key with anyone, including us.
What does "Test my backup" do?
It checks that your backup really works. You type three numbered groups from your paper copy, or paste the whole key from your password manager. Your key counts as backed up only once the test passes.
I have a new phone. How do I move my account?
Install SovTalk on the new phone and choose "Use your existing key". Paste your secret key or scan its QR code, then tap "Import key". Your key never leaves the phone. Your profile, friends list and the last 30 days of conversations sync back from our server. Photos and videos older than 7 days can't be downloaded again, because our server deletes them after 7 days.
I lost my phone. What can I do?
If you backed up your key, set up SovTalk on a new phone with "Use your existing key", as above. If you didn't, the account can't be recovered and you'll need to create a new one. We can't reset or recover keys, because we never have them.
Can I use a key from another Nostr app?
Yes. Choose "Use your existing key" and paste the secret key (it starts with
nsec).
Notifications
How do I turn notifications on?
Go to Profile → Notifications. If you turned them off earlier, the app opens your phone's settings for SovTalk so you can turn them back on.
Why don't notifications show the message?
On purpose. Notifications are delivered by Apple or Google, so they contain nothing: no text, no sender, no names. They only tell the app there's something new; open SovTalk to see it.
Calls
How do I call a friend?
Open your conversation with them and choose "Voice call" or "Video call". You can only call friends.
Can I call emergency services?
No. SovTalk calls can't reach 911, 112 or any emergency service. Use your phone's regular dialer in an emergency.
Why do SovTalk calls appear in my phone's call history?
So they feel like regular calls. Apple or Google may back up that history with your phone's data, so you can turn off "Show calls in phone history" in Profile.
Does SovTalk reduce background noise?
Yes. Tap "Noise cancellation" during a call. It runs on your phone.
Can the other person see my IP address?
No. Every call goes through our relay server in Québec, so neither side learns the other's IP address. Calls are encrypted end to end, we don't record them, and the relay keeps no logs.
On-device AI
What does the AI do?
When you write a post, tap "Suggest clearer wording" for a clearer version of your text; in chats, the sparkles button suggests wording too. You decide whether to use a suggestion. If you use one in a post, the post shows "AI-assisted".
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Suggestions are made on your phone, by Apple Intelligence or Gemini Nano if your phone has them, or by SovTalk's writing helper. Nothing you write is sent to SovTalk or anyone else.
What's the writing helper download?
On phones without Apple Intelligence or Gemini Nano, SovTalk offers its writing helper: a small open model that runs only on your phone. It's a large download (about 0.9 to 1.6 GB, depending on your phone), so the app asks first and tells you the size; it may use mobile data if you're not on Wi-Fi. It needs at least 4 GB of memory. You can delete it any time in Profile → On-device AI.
On iPhone, how do I turn on Apple Intelligence?
Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → turn on Apple Intelligence. It may take a little while to get ready.
Deleting
How do I delete a post?
Open the post's menu and choose "Delete post". It's removed from SovTalk on all devices, including your friends'. Copies other Nostr apps already saved can't be erased.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile → "Delete account". Your profile, posts, friends, messages and photos are erased from SovTalk's server and from all your devices. Your friends' phones erase your chats and posts too. This can't be undone.
Can I delete something only on my phone?
Yes. On someone's post, choose "Delete from my feed". In a chat, long-press a message and choose Delete, or delete the whole conversation. These are removed from this phone only; other people keep their copies.
Reporting and blocking
How do I report a post or a person?
Choose "Report post" in a post's menu, or "Report" in a person's options. You can include up to 10 messages you choose from your chat; nothing else is shared. Our moderators review reports within 24 hours, and the person isn't told who reported them.
How do I block someone?
Choose Block in their options, or on a friend request. You won't see their requests or messages, and they won't be notified.
What about child safety?
Report it with "Child safety" as the reason. We report child sexual abuse material to the authorities as Canadian law requires.
Privacy questions
Can SovTalk read my messages?
No. Messages, photos, videos and calls are encrypted on your phone. Our relay sees only who a message is for (as a public ID), its size and an approximate time.
Are my posts public?
Yes. Your posts, name and profile photo are public. Your Feed shows only your friends, but anyone with your public ID can read your posts, and other apps can copy them.
Where is my data stored?
In Beauharnois, Québec, on OVHcloud servers. Nothing is hosted in the United States. See Privacy and sovereignty and our privacy policy.

Never send us your secret key. We will never ask for it.
